Troubleshooting Error Lights for Epson Printers

Error lights help you quickly understand what your printer needs—whether it’s paper, an open cover, or a paper jam. This guide breaks down each light indicator for both Epson thermal and dot‑matrix printers so anyone can easily diagnose common issues.

A) Thermal Printer (TM‑T88V)


Below is what each light means and what you should do next. 

Power Light 

What it means: 

  • ON (Green) → The printer is receiving power and is ready. 

No troubleshooting needed unless other lights are ON. 

Paper Light 

What it means: 

  • ON → Paper is near its end or completely out. 
  • Flashing → Printer is in standby mode. 

What to do: 

  • Reseat or replace the thermal paper roll. 
  • Ensure the roll is installed with the thermal side facing the print head

Error Light 

Steady ON 

Cause: 

  • Printer cover is open 
  • Paper roll is incorrectly loaded 

Fix: 

  • Open the cover 
  • Re‑load the paper correctly 
  • Close the cover firmly until it clicks 

Flashing 

Cause: 

  • Paper jam 
  • Overheated print head 

Fix: 

  • Turn off printer 
  • Open the cover and remove jammed paper carefully 
  • Let printer cool for a few minutes if overheated 
  • Power it back ON 

B) Dot‑Matrix Printer (TM‑U220B)


POWER Light 

What it means: 

  • ON → Printer is powered. 

No action required unless other lights are also active. 

ERROR Light 

Steady ON 

Cause: 

  • Paper end 
  • Cover is open 

Fix: 

  • Check that paper is loaded and aligned 
  • Close the cover fully 

Flashing 

Cause: 

  • Mechanical error 
  • Paper jam 

Fix: 

  • Turn off the printer 
  • Remove any jammed paper from the paper path 
  • Check for obstructions inside 
  • Power the printer back ON 

PAPER OUT Light 

What it means: 

  • ON → Printer is out of paper or almost out. 

Fix: 

  • Reload paper and ensure it is fed correctly through the guides.
