How to Create a New Category and Subcategory in DPOS
Organizing your menu with categories and subcategories in DPOS makes it easier for staff to navigate and ensures a smoother ordering process. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to setting up a new category and its subcategories.
Create a New Category
✅ Log in to DPOS with an admin account.✅ Navigate to Maintenance > Order Item Categories.
✅ Click Create New and enter a category name (e.g., Hot Drinks).
✅ Click Save.
✅ When prompted:

- ✅ Click YES if you do not need a subcategory.
- ✅ Click NO to create a different subcategory.
✅ Go to Maintenance > Order Item Subcategory.
✅ Click Create New.
✅ Select the category you just created from the dropdown (e.g., Hot Drinks).
✅ Enter the subcategory name (e.g., Coffee), then click Save.
✅ Repeat for additional subcategories (e.g., Tea).
Match Printer Output Settings
✅ Check the printer configuration of a similar category (e.g., Pizza, Drinks).✅ Apply the same settings to your new category/subcategories for consistent printing.
✅ Copy printer matrix values to ensure orders are routed correctly.
Review your categories and subcategories after setup to confirm correct printing and item grouping. Making adjustments early prevents errors during order processing.
Create a New Category
Log in to your DPOS application using an admin account.
Go to the Maintenance section.
Click on Order Item Categories.
Select Create New (top right of the screen).
Enter your desired category name (e.g., Hot Drinks).
Click Save.
When prompted with: “Do you want to create a subcategory with the same description?”
- Click YES if you do not need to create a separate subcategory. This will keep all items under the main category without additional grouping.
- Click NO if you want to create a unique subcategory with a different name, allowing for better organization and item separation.
Creating Subcategories
Go back to the Maintenance section, and go to the Order Item Subcategory.
Go to the Order Item Subcategory.
Create New button
On the Category description dropdown, click on the category you just created (e.g., Hot Drinks).
In the Description field, type in your first subcategory (e.g., Coffee), then click Save.
Repeat the process to add more subcategories (e.g., Tea).
Important Note: Match Printer Output Settings
To ensure consistency in how your new items print to the kitchen:
- Check the printer output configuration (e.g., Y, Y or Y, N) of a similar category, like Drinks.
- Y enables printing, while N disables it.
- Apply the same settings to your new category/subcategories by copying the printer matrix values, by copying the printer matrix values that apply most appropriately to your new subcategories.
